I am a graduate of AVU’s Studio of Restoration of Sculpture, which emphasizes restoration as well as sculpture. In fact, this combination of art restoration and sculpture enticed me to switch from a purely sculptural studio in my second year at the school.
The material that I have most focused on as a restorer is stone, which includes stone sculptures and stone elements of architecture. In my fourth year, I began to take an interest in polychrome surface finishes, where I studied historic techniques – encaustic painting, and later also the structure of Gothic polychrome. I further explored this subject in my thesis, which involved the restoration of a Gothic polychrome stone Madonna from Old Town Square, a polychrome sculpture of a Minotaur from the courtyard of AVU’s Modern Gallery, and an original polychrome keystone depicting a triumphant lamb from the year 1300 where I also wrote on the issue of the structure of polychrome on a stone surface.
