Just as it is important to discuss our shared space and the nature of the things around us (and to do so from an early age), it is also important to decide about this space together, democratically. Students vote to accept new students as well as the person who will help shape their study programme. It doesn’t have to be an experienced artist, but depending on the shared interest it could be a programmer, author, psychologist, or plant breeder.
Shared decision-making requires taking a critical stance towards one’s surroundings, one that must be balanced out with loyalty, understanding, and a willingness to help the other students in the studio. This isn’t entirely simple, but it is important and it creates different types of relationships and a different way of being in the shared space.
