At our school, we focus on the comprehensive acquisition of formal experience and testing the intuitive attitudes that often “inexplicably” control an individual’s focus and orientation. We nurture self-reflection and the drive to follow one’s vision. These are the basic abilities necessary for connecting the student with his or her personal experiences and talents.
We work with conceptual approaches, which are found in both classical and less traditional artistic disciplines. We understand the term “concept” as similar to “will”. This will moves things and is present in any human activity. We study the concept of creation, cross-section, relationships; the concept of surface, depth and left or right; the concept of opening and closing; and the concept of finding, losing and gathering. Last but not least, we study the concept of concepts... But it would be wrong to think that conceptual art comes only from thinking about things, or that conceptual art is simply something you think up. The impulse for conceptual art can come from anything that sets things in motion or creates a situation. Connecting to these things is a concept in motion. Finding one’s way in this motion is the concept of not remaining blocked. It is a process of permanent searching for one’s own individuality and direction in life; it is the constant acceptance and rejection of certain conventions. It is about finding freedom in seeming constraints.
Work- and study-related activities in our studio explore the concepts that define and determine this conceptual framework. We explore the meaning of participation, symbiotic and parasitic norms, the art world as such, the social status of the exceptional ways in which art is perceived, mono-mediality, spaces, ephemerality, tradition and interconnectedness. All this in technologically well-equipped facilities.
The study environment at the studio for conceptual exploration is of a fundamentally synthetic nature. Its purpose is to nurture selected individuals in the hope that, given the proper conditions, our students will receive a good education, find their place in the world, and above all be able to use their artistic and personal qualities – their art – to improve and influence the world around them.
Art education is a living discipline that must be redefined over and over again with the arrival of each new individual and his or her ideas.
